The Bubble Guppies crochet doll set, all seven

Seven characters in the Bubble Guppies crochet doll set: Molly, Gil, Goby, Deema, Oona, Nonny and Bubble Puppy.

A class of young merpeople who live underwater and spend each day learning something new — counting, sharing, how a thing works — with Bubble Puppy along for all of it. Preschool through and through, which is why these are the dolls most often bought for a two-year-old.

Six of them are merpeople and the seventh is a dog, which is what makes the set work on a shelf — six tails in six colours, then a small round puppy that breaks the row. Each is crocheted as its own doll, so a set can be bought one character at a time.

The tails

Every tail is worked as a separate piece in its own colour and joined at the waist, and the fin is shaped rather than stuffed flat. That is the part that takes the longest and the part people order this set for; at the smallest size the fin loses its curve, so the 8 inch size up is the one to choose if the tail matters to you.

Hair

Molly's pigtails and Deema's swept fringe are hand-stitched strand by strand rather than crocheted in one block, which is why no two are identical. Oona's is shorter and sits close to the head, and Gil, Goby and Nonny are worked smooth.
